Fairly good train connections of the Moravian-Silesian region with the Czech Republic and with abroad are provided by a public rail network, which is operated by Czech Railways services, Inc. (CD). Through the Moravian-Silesian region goes the 2nd rail route, which connects Břeclav with Bohumín and the 3rd rail route, connecting Mosty u Jablunkova and Cheb. In addition to these important lines there is an ongoing modernization of a large part of the railway network, in 2006 electric line Ostrava-Svinov - Opava East was brought into operation. Currently we are working on the electrification of the section between Ostrava main station - Frýdek-Místek - Český Těšín, and during 2007 the first section to Ostrava-Kunčice was put into operation. Ostrava currently has direct rail link to Prague (3 hours), Vienna (3 hours), Bratislava (3 hours), Warsaw (4.5 hours), Budapest (6 hours) and Moscow (27.5 hours). For access on board international trains, we recommend stations in Ostrava Svinov or Ostrava main station, where passengers are provided with the best services.

Purchase of tickets

By Train

For travelling by train it is necessary to buy a ticket in the ticket office of any railway station before getting on board a train. The exception is in the smaller stations where there is not continuous operation of ticket offices, especially during the night. In such cases, passengers usually buy a ticket from the train crew. Most regional connections provide the possibility of travelling in the 2nd class only, many trains of higher category offer the option of purchasing tickets for 1st class, including the regional passenger train service City Elefant. Especially for travelling longer distances outside the region, we recommend buying a seat reservation ticket, it is mandatory for travelling by category SuperCity Pendolino trains on the route Ostrava - Prague. Ticket prices depend on the length of routes and on selected classes, Czech railway offers to their passengers a number of discounts (group, network, return, etc.). Journey through the region in the second-class in the distance of 50 km without any discounts would roughly cost 75 CZK.

Supporting services

By Train

Czech railway gives passengers a range of extra services directly at selected railway stations or on-line on the website of Czech Railways. For example purchase of food, passenger information (CD Centre) or the tourist information centres (Ostrava, Karviná), left-luggage offices, exchange offices, bicycle rentals, etc. 1st class passengers on SuperCity Pendolino trains have refreshment and daily newspapers included in the price of the ticket, there is also a possibility to connect portable computers (power 230V). On-line you can buy a ticket or reserve a seat, find the current location of the train or find a connection.
